Birth

In the 1841 census she is given as age 34 giving a calculated year of birth of 1806/07. In the 1851 census she is given as age 43 giving a calculated year of birth of 1807/08. In the 1861 census she is given as age 54 giving a calculated year of birth of 1806/07.

Grace Aze 017 is listed as this Grace Aze's mother in the 1851 census, and so William is assumed to be her father.

Of the four Grace Aze deaths recorded in St Catherines House, this is the only one that could be attributed to this Grace. It was also recorded in a similar area to where she was last known to be living, in the census of 1871.

1851 census shows Grace Aze living at Instow Quay, Parish of Instow. Age 43. Occupation: school mistress. Born in Instow. Living with mother Grace Aze 017, age 97. Occupation: pauper.

1861 census shows Grace Aze living at Vicarage, Parish of Bishops Nympton, north Devon. Age 54. Unmarried. Relation to head of family: servant. Occupation: cook. Born: Instow. Living with Joseph Thorne (head), age 63, vicar of Bishops Nympton; his wife Sarah Thorne, age 64, "vicar's wife" and servant Mary J. Hoskin, age 16, house and parlour maid.

1871 census shows Grace Aze living at an unreadable address in East Dulwich, Parish of St Giles, Camberwell, parliamentary borough of Lambeth. Age: 56 (difficult to read). Unmarried. Servant. Occupation: cook. Born in Instow. Living with James Hughes (head), age 68, mayor something something, paralysed; his wife Elizabeth Hughes, age 35; visitor Emma J. Agnew, age 30; servant William Blanchard, age 28, attendant; servant Samuel Turner, age 22, gardener; servant Thomas Floyd, age 56, something and servant Martha Cratt, age 26, parlour maid.

The age for Grace Aze in the 1871 census is slightly off as that would make her born in 1814/15. However there aren't any other Grace Azes that it could be so it most likely is her and she just forgot her age or it was misrecorded.
